pink scarves, pillows, and the spring motif scarf

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

OK, here are a number of items all in one post.

The scarves for the sisters. First, the Tiffany scarf:

Yarns:
Moda-Dea Aerie, pink (main color)
Pattons Allure, mink (brown)
Lion Brand Incredible ribbon yarn, autumn leaves (fringe and accent)

pattern: all dc, alternating at whim. size: 3.5” wide by 70” (+5” fringe, so total 80” long)

And her sister’s scarf (now named Glow):

Yarns:
Pattons Divine, floral fantasy (main color, pink)
Moda-Dea Curious, black cherry (accent pink and fringe)
Pattons Allure, mink (brown)
Lion Brand Incredible ribbon yarn, autumn leaves (fringe and accent)

pattern: all dc, alternating at whim. size: 3.5” wide by 70” (+5” fringe, so total 80” long). Fringe is Curious yarn and ribbon yarn together.

The pillow I traded for a skirt my friend, Corrie, made:

Yarns:
Lion Brand Lion suede, denim (thin, dk. blue)
Lion Brand Chenille, dusty blue and periwinkle (light and medium blues)
Lion Brand fun fur, Lime (fringe)
Lion Brand Boucle Yarn, Lime Blue (mixed blue/green yarn)

Pattern: inspired by the round pillow in Simple Crochet by Erika Knight.

The motif scarf I was inspired to make after seeing something like it on the Anthropologie website:

Yarn: Crochet thread size 10 in lime, turquoise, light blue and a yellow-green

pattern: alternating colors in 3 motifs from The Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet Stitches. Motifs are Sunflower I (p. 299), French Square (p. 301), and Eastern Star (p. 305).

will i ever catch up?

I’ve got, count ‘em, 5 more projects to show. Yes, I have finished these all in June: 3 scarves, another hat, and a pillow. Whew! I told ya I was nuts about this!

poncho craze

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

If one is to immerse oneself in this fiber-art subculture, one should make at least one poncho. This one was finished in early May 2005–within weeks of the first two projects:

This pattern I grabbed from Crochet Pattern Central, The Super Simple Trellis Stitch Poncho. I made it a bit shorter–I wanted it to just hit my elbows (can’t this girl EVER do anything by a pattern or a plan???). It told me it needed fringe…

Yarn: Lion Brand Moonlight Mohair, Safari. 3 skeins, I think.

the caroline scarf

I quickly got inspired to make something for someone else. How about my ultra-hip 15-yr-old sis? Fav colors: brown and turquoise. Poof! Out rolled a scarf:

Specs:
Patons Cha cha (fringe): Jazz
Lion Brand Fun Fur: Olive
Bernat Boa Eyelash yarn: Peacock
Patons Allure: mink
Pattons Allure, turquoise (3 skeins)

Finished size of scarf (without fringe) 4.5”-7” wide x 70” and with fringe: 84” long (7” fringe). Double crochet throughout.

I also had trouble seeing the stitches, so I accidently increased and decreased (a bit lazy about counting stitches…I’m learning) and ended up with a scarf that changed in width from 4.5″ up to 7″ at the widest spot. I ended up selling this one to a friend (who said, “oooh, I love how the width changes throughout the scarf!”) and making my sister a proper skinny scarf:

Finished size of the don’t-be-lazy-count-your-stitches proper skinny scarf 3″ wide x 73″ plus 5″ fringe on either side.

the first project: the green hat

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

This was the first project. Yup, a hat. I finished this one in April 2005. No one told me that it might be easier to use something where you could see your stitches. I like yarn! I like big yarn! I am crazy about novelty yarns. Never mind I couldn’t see my stitches. That’s me: just do what you like even if it is hard. When I taught myself to sew, I slipcovered my couch (pillows and cushions too) as my first project. What does this say about me???

the green hat

The yarn is Jo-Ann Sensations Angel Hair, Color: Forest Green: 22% Wool, 50% Acrylic, 28% Nylon. I started with the pattern “Two Too Cloche” from Hip to Crochet. I couldn’t see my stitches, so I gave up counting rounds. I made the “work even” part too long, so I never increased again, flipped up the brim, added some funky fringe, and sewed it around to attach. I added a flower up top from the “Mohair Hats” pattern, since I didn’t do a great job of making a magic adjustable ring and ended up with a big hole in the top.
