spin, dye, yeah!

Well, this is a little better. Hand spun 100% merino wool dyed with Cushing dyes in terra cotta (40 yards) and seal brown (19 yards). The brown is my first attempt to ply. I thought the ply yarn was wool, but it didn’t take the dye like the rest of the yarn. Hmmmm…..

I’ve found a nice way to skein my yarn, and this is it. I space my ladder-back chairs about 1.5 yard apart and wind away!

Well, I got the urge to spin last night about 11pm. I don’t know why…it just seemed like a cozy thing to do! I finally got to a point that I decided to break the yarn and make a ball. It’s just under 2 oz. and about 15 yards. It is spun on my Louet drop spindle from Australian merino roving, not dyed.

edit on Oct. 29:
The yarn got dunked in cherry and grape kool-aid! Yuck! I might need to over-dye this one. My son and I had fun trying it out though…

yup, she’s starting to spin

I got my order from the Earth Guild. I received about 4 oz. each of cleaned and carded undyed domestic and Australian wool top by post yesterday (well, I thought starting with learning how to do the washing and carding was a bit much). Plus I got a drop spindle. The Earth Guild kindly does telephone orders–none of this new-fangled internet ordering for them! They like to advise you as you’re ordering–I quite liked it.

I started spinning some last night. What fun! So self-sufficient.

I dream of getting to know the people at the alpaca farm a couple of streets over…
